US Intelligence - Bali Attack 'Sophisticated'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The bombings of a popular nightclub strip in
the Indonesian resort island of Bali were conducted by a "sophisticated"
terrorist group because of the large amount of high explosives used and
the coordination of the attacks, a U.S. intelligence official said on Monday.
That is why U.S. intelligence agencies believe the Saturday night bombings
of an area frequented by foreign tourists was probably the work of a group
linked to al Qaeda which would have the capability of striking that type
of blow. More than 180 people were killed in the attacks.
"We haven't come to any final conclusions, but it's clearly the work
of a sophisticated terrorist organization of which there are only a few,
there are some in that region that are associated with al Qaeda like JI
(Jemaah Islamiah)," a U.S. intelligence official told Reuters.
"There were near simultaneous explosions designed to inflict the greatest
amount of casualties on innocent people," the official said.
Al Qaeda has been blamed for coordinated attacks against Western targets
such as the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, and
the Sept. 11, 2001, suicide attacks that used four hijacked planes as weapons.
The network has also been linked to the USS Cole bombing in 2000 when
a small boat carrying explosives blew up alongside the U.S. destroyer off
Yemen, gouging a huge hole in its side.
U.S. intelligence agencies are also analyzing whether the Bali bombings
were linked in some way to recent shooting deaths of U.S. Marines in Kuwait
and an explosion at a French tanker off the coast of Yemen.
The speculation was that they could all be the work of independent
terror cells responding to a call by al Qaeda leaders for increased action,
officials said.
Qatar's al Jazeera television has recently broadcast audiotapes of
Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahri, as well as a statement
the station said was faxed that carried bin Laden's signature. The messages
called on Muslims to conduct war against the United States and Israel.
U.S. intelligence officials said the authenticity of the latest reported
bin Laden statement had not been determined. U.S. intelligence agencies
had earlier determined the audiotapes were probably genuine. The one by
Zawahri was made in recent months, but the time frame for the one made
by bin Laden could not be determined, they said.
The al Qaeda messages broadcast on Jazeera, along with other electronic
communications picked up by U.S. intelligence agencies, have shown the
type of increased "chatter" among terrorist suspects that have preceded
past attacks, said Sen. Richard Shelby, an Alabama Republican.
"Most of the time there have been terrorist attacks immediately after
a lot of signal traffic," Shelby, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence
Committee, said.
That happened before the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa, the
USS Cole attack and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, he
said.
"These are not isolated incidents," Shelby said of the recent attacks
in Bali, Kuwait and Yemen. "They are measured, they are planned, they are
part of the terrorist attacks, and there will be more," he told Reuters.
Visitor on Island is Hal Turner Show Listener;
Sent pics and footage from video!

BALI- A tourist on holiday on the island of Bali has sent the Hal Turner
Show astonishing, first-hand video footage excerpts and pictures of the
recent bomb blast which claimed over 187 lives, injured over 300, destroyed
47 buildings and over 100 cars.
WARNING: The photos below show graphic carnage including humans decapitated,
burnt to death in a pile of human remains and others who are severely injured.
These photos ought not be viewed by those weak of heart.
Video
clearly shows a rising mushroom cloud over the blast area, with the characteristic
airborne flames burning at a sustained interval after the initial blast.
This is not achievable with typical explosives because they explode and
burn at ground level, rising only as high as the force of the initial blast
can carry them, and extinguishing within a second or two.
The Videographer reports a blinding white flash caught everyone's attention,
prompting them to turn to the direction of the flash and record the subsequent
mushroom cloud! As is common knowledge, only a nuclear explosion yields
a blinding white flash and subsequent mushroom cloud with airborne flame.
Several blocks away, ignited
by "white hot flash"
Soil, air and debris samples have been obtained from VERY near the blast
site - without intruding upon police evidence collection procedures or
violating any local laws. Those soil samples are already off the island
and enroute to a reputable laboratory for confirmation of radioactive -
or other- contamination.
The lab is in possession of records which document the radioactive
"signatures" of various weapons-grade plutonium, uranium and other fissionable
materials produced around the world. This lab will be able to say with
certainty if this was a nuclear incident and if so, will be able to cite
from which nation the fissionable material likely originated! Test results
will be released on The Hal Turner Show web site when they become available.
I have also arranged for the results to be distributed via another web
site should I suddenly disappear or otherwise become "incapacitated."
US Warned Indonesia of Terror Threat

THE United States ambassador to Jakarta, Ralph Boyce, had warned the
Indonesian government only a few days before the blasts in Bali that unless
it acted against terrorist groups posing a threat to westerners, America
would begin to withdraw its diplomatic staff.
Last night those terrorists appeared to have struck at one of the most
vulnerable and valuable targets in the country in a night of carnage on
the paradise island of Bali, Indonesia's main source of tourist revenue.
The attacks will be a shattering blow to the "Island of the gods" which
draws visitors from all over the world to experience mellow, exotic beauty
and colourful Hindu traditions amid the world's most populous Muslim nation.
Bali's laid-back image is an affront to groups of Islamic extremists
who want to bomb Indonesia's 220 million people into a sharia state run
on Saudi Arabian lines.
The island has little security and is open to anyone seeking to strike
soft targets as it gears up for an influx of tens of thousands of Christmas
tourists from Australia, Europe, the United States and Japan.
Western intelligence officials have been arguing for more than a month
with their Indonesian counterparts for action after the capture in west
Java of a senior Al-Qaeda terrorist, Omar Al-Faruq, whose leaked confessions
described plans to attack local targets.
The CIA had even presented Indonesian officials with evidence of an
Al-Qaeda plot to assassinate President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
But US and British officials have openly admitted their frustration
as the Indonesians failed to arrest individuals they believe are directly
involved in planning and committing terrorism.
Megawati's government is a coalition dependent on the support of Islamic
religious parties and she fears a backlash from Muslim activists who are
trying to wreak havoc in a nation that has a long tradition of religious
harmony.
Last night's explosions are likely to force the government to confront
its most radical opponents or risk the destruction of a multi-million-pound
tourist industry that is one of the country's few resources after the Asian
financial crash and the chaotic overthrow of its longtime dictator, General
Suharto, in 1998.
Indonesia boasts a bewildering proliferation of groups competing for
hardline Islamic support, including a murderous militia called Laskar Jihad,
which has used ethnic cleansing methods to expel Christians from the Spice
Islands.
But western officials have identified one group, Jamaah Islamiyah, as
the most credible terrorist threat following a visit to its leaders two
years ago by Osama Bin Laden's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
They have singled out a firebrand cleric, Abu Bakar Basyir, as the spiritual
guide of the group. In two recent interviews with The Sunday Times, Basyir
denied any connections to terrorism, although he vowed to go on preaching
that Muslims had a duty to use violence in a just religious cause.
Basyir, 65, has been linked to Al-Qaeda in a series of leaked CIA documents
and in statements by security officials in the US and Singapore. Both countries
have demanded, in vain, that Indonesia detain him.
A defiant Basyir filed lawsuits in a Jakarta court for defamation against
the CIA and Time magazine, which printed details of the allegations.
The accusations are partly based on an alleged confession by Al-Faruq,
a 31-year-old Kuwaiti said to be an emissary of Al-Qaeda in southeast Asia.
Indonesian security agents, acting on a tip-off from the CIA, arrested
Al-Faruq in west Java last June. Three months later, the CIA interrogators
are said to have broken Al-Faruq's resistance and extracted testimony against
Basyir.
After the Indonesians complained that they had received nothing in exchange
for their assistance, the Americans handed over the dossier and demanded
they arrest Basyir.
