CONGRESSMAN DAVIS STATEMENT
ON U.S. PATRIOT ACT VOTE
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D) released the following statement today concerning this week’s vote on reauthorization of the Patriot Act:
“During a time of heightened terror alerts and the apparent resurgence of Al Queida in Europe, I could not in good conscience vote to dramatically limit our government’s ability to combat terrorism. While I do not agree with every provision in the Patriot Act, the act does provide important tools for law enforcement agencies seeking to undermine terrorist networks.
“Some of my colleagues in the House do believe that the Patriot Act curtails civil liberties too much, but I am not prepared to say that I or most Americans feel less free today than before the act was passed.
“Finally, reauthorization of the Patriot Act does not prevent a future Congress from at any time reacting to abuses of power by passing new laws or outright repealing parts of the act. Congress should remain vigilant as to how and when the Patriot Act is deployed.”
