Last summer I built a magnetic compass large enough to read one degree increments. Yesterday I checked out for the first time in February and there was a two degree shift to the east. In January the reading was nineteen degrees (019). February 20 2005 my compass is reading twenty-one degrees (021). I had been warned about magnetic shifts, but seeing it was a shock.

Growing up in Vancouver BC in the 1960s the magnetic reading was seventeen degrees east of true north. We were told that at Winnipeg magnetic north and true north were nearly the same. Aircraft in the Northwest Territories could not trust magnetic compasses and radio navigation was set up for Canada. Now Global Positioning Systems, GPS, have replaced radio navigation. Magnetic compasses are still available but small and imprecise. I have the additional problem of not being able to work with them because of magnetism in my body. I have to place a compass on the ground and back up a few steps and then try to read the compass from a distance.

I have heard of second and third hand reports about strange changes in the Earth's magnetic field but I could not verify them myself. So I cut out a half inch by twelve inch strip of sheet iron, creased it down the middle for strength, made a straight pin swivel in the middle and mounted it on a thin 14 inch by 14 inch square of plywood with all 360 degrees marked on it. To this point the iron is not magnetic. To create strong magnet I stuck two identical rare earth magnets in the crease either side of the swivel point balancing the weight of the swing arm. The needle point in a center dimple in the swing arm allowed for the arm to swing freely. I tested its sensitivity and found out that I had to move it to the far side of the house from the stove, fridge, washer and dryer as those appliances were deflecting the needle. Likewise I had to move away from the compass to get a true reading.

In the same way movies depict sea captains tapping their large brass and glass encased compasses to fine tune their readings I tapped many times to get the true reading. All my readings were 017 save the day in November when I saw 025. I tapped and it remained at 025. I told my wife and she thought that the poles might be reversing and reminded me to mark one of the ends with an "N" because if the poles do reverse, "You would not know until you checked with the small compass." The needles on small compasses are marked with red paint on the north pointing end of the needle. I did what she recommended and placed the swing arm back in position and it read 017? The earlier 025 reading was an error because the swing arm was not sitting on the pin correctly. I told my wife about my error and that the poles were not reversing, in November 2004.

So with the 021 reading of February 20 2005 I took the compass off its pin and remounted it twice. I checked for nearby metal, there was none. I checked for the field strength by deflecting the swing arm about thirty degrees and watching it swing back and forth like a pendulum. Eventually the swing was dampened to zero by the friction of the pin and swivel. I guessed that the magnetic field strength is still about 0.5 gauss, the same as last year.

The North Magnetic Pole has been in the Canadian north for the thousand years. It wanders. In 1950 it was near Prince of Wales Island. Most maps now place it near Bathurst Island. Even with a dip-meter compass it is difficult to pin point the magnetic pole as geomagnetism is a "slippery rascal". At magnetic north compasses act weirdly and determination of the pole position is made by a large number of readings over a large piece of icy real estate. According to my compass the magnetic north pole is moving east towards Greenland. Let the Greenlanders have it, has been an elusive guest under Canada. Of course when the poles reverse the north magnetic pole may be under Antarctica and the south magnetic pole may be under Siberia, but who knows when or where? The Earth is holding onto that secret for now.

Building a dip meter has been beyond my current technical expertise. The swing arm has to be on a secure pivot and finely balanced before being magnetized. One of the finest pivots available is the axle and tire of a Mattel "Hot Wheels" racer, maybe that will work.

I saw a dip meter at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. At a time when the magnetic north reading was 017 the dip was about 60 degrees below the northern horizon. Vancouver is 49.5 degrees north. As the field lines are curved the geophysicists guessed that the magnetic pole was a broad volume of the mantle about 1500 miles beneath the Canadian Archipelago. As to what was creating the magnetism there were a lot of theories but they all had gapping holes and they still have no concrete theory on planetary magnetism. Most of what is written about magnetism and geo-magnetism in text books is baloney.

More people should build their own magnetic compasses and make their own determinations of the magnetic field of the planet from where they live. Sylphs told me to build this compass so that I would have physical measurements to back their information.

Two Degrees Part 2

After sending the email regarding the deflection of my magnetic compass by two degree yesterday at noon, my compass moved an additional two degrees east to 023 in THREE HOURS! This morning it is still at 023.

As Salmon Arm is 1850 miles from Bathurst Island where the north magnetic pole is supposed to be each degree of deflection, is at minimum 32 miles of movement on the surface. I called Ken Adachi and he has seen this type of magnetic deflection before. Researching on the web there are magnetic maps of the earth showing large variations of magnetic field strength worldwide. The South Atlantic was almost down to zero magnetic field strength last year. North magnetic zones were popping up in the southern hemisphere. Ken says that magma flow can change magnetic fields indicating that the deflection in Salmon Arm can be local. Salmon Arm is to the north of an ancient volcano, Mount Ida. Mount Ida's east peak was once 8000 feet plus high but now is eroded to below 5000 feet. This mountain has not been active in a long time.

Even a localized magnetic deflection under central British Columbia means that there is a lot of pressure on the coastal faults. I phoned my sister on a gulf island between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. She had just got word from a psychic that there could be a 7.5 earthquake on the coast. My sister had been expecting another warning from me. I called another psychic and she was getting warnings too. She felt that the full moon on February 23 could cause something to pop.

Waking up this morning I knew that the magnetic deflection was local. I also awoke with vivid memories of the family trip to California in the summer of 1964. Taking I5 from Vancouver we stopped at the "World Famous Oregon Vortex" near Gold Hill north of Medford. The tour guide showed us a lot of strange things on that mountainside but added, "Since the Good Friday Earthquake in Alaska some of the magnetic phenomena has changed." I do not know when the tourist stop closed but I have not heard about the Oregon Vortex in 35 years. Another tidbit I remember was that scientists with sensitive equipment had discovered many vortexes in the Cascades. I have not read anything on these discoveries.

I also awoke and had no fear about the magnetic anomaly. I will keep track of the earth changes and keep a regular log of magnetic deviations. More people should be doing the same.

Two Degrees Part 3

Today, February 22 2005, I checked my magnetic compass and was shocked to find that it had moved east another two degrees overnight. It was 025! I took the compass apart, dusted it, put it back together and it still read 025. I tapped it repeatedly and it returned to 025 every time.

At 10:15 AM PST it was 021? At 10:23 AM PST it was 027! At 10:45 AM it was 026. At noon it was 028. and now at 3:00 PM it is 029. !!!!!

I checked the US Geological Survey website for earthquakes and other phenomena. A 6.4 Richter earthquake in Iran. On the news, over 300 dead. I phoned two others to check their compasses. I am feeling a lot of energy and have not been warned by the sylphs that I am in danger. They are warning that a lot of people are to being warned to go to high ground.
