I thought readers would be interested in noting the disparity between Internet ranking statistics reported by www.alexa.com and my own web server.
According to Alexa.com, Algeria is ranked fourth after the USA, Canada, and Finland, while Algeria doesn't even show up among the top 30 countries which are ranked percentage wise by the number of hits from each country. Australia is ranked eight on the Alexa site, while Australia is ranked number two based on the number of hits.
I think I remember reading a few years ago that Alexa.com computes their statistics based on feedback from people who use Internet Explorer for a web browser, and not from other web browsers. If that is still the case, then their stats aren't going to be that accurate as many people no longer use Internet Explorer.
I'm sure you computer Whiz Kids out there know much more about this topic than I , and can perhaps add more insights to these observations .
For people who are new to Internet ranking statistics, the lower the number, the more frequent that web site is visited by Internet users in a given country. For example, according to Alexa.com, on March 20, 2010, my web site had a ranking of 17, 128 for the United States. Therefore, my web site is the 17, 128th most frequently visited web site among Internet users inside the USA.
By the way, can someone tell me where the country of Old style Arpanet is? I'm tremendously grateful that the people from this country are ranked 28th among the top 30 countries visiting my web site, but who are they and where are they? It sounds like a classification for an ancient style of painting or architecture, rather than the name of a country (no offense intended, of course)

Dear Ken
You raised a question re- Arpanet.
The following, copied from Wiki, will, I hope, answer your query.
ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), created by the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the United States Department of Defense, was the
world's first operational packet switching network, and the predecessor of the
contemporary global Internet. The packet switching of the ARPANET was based on
designs by Lawrence Roberts, of the Lincoln Laboratory.
Kind regards
Alan

Hello Alan,
OK, thanks.
So it's not a country, but DARPA, an extention of the Pentagon. They're right up there in the top 30 list right along with the US military and the US government.
