I just read a short UK article (see below) linked at rense.com which says that the U.S. Department of Energy will initiate a trial in Seattle, Washington to install 5,000 street lights powered by LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). From a health perspective, employing the very limited and NARROW band width of frequencies emitted by LEDs as ambient light, is a HUGE mistake.
Similar to the insanity of promoting high voltage compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) to replace healthier incandescent light bulbs,
replacing the FULL SPECTRUM of light frequencies afforded by the sun with artificial lighting can be a tricky business if you don't understand the implications to ones health-both physical and psychological. The late Dr John Ott discovered this many years ago when he conducted tests of growing plants using various types of artificial lighting. Only lighting which most closely emulated the sun's spectrum of light (incandescent lighting), produced the best results. Fluorescent light produced the WORST results
Darius Dinshah, whose father was one of the greatest pioneers of light therapy in the 20th century,
has been decrying for decades the foolishness of substituting low cost SPECTRUM-DISTORED lighting provided by fluorescent, LED, or other exotic ionized-metal vapors in place of more Nature-friendly -and closer to full spectrum- INCANDESCENT lighting
It's bad enough that people have to contend with mercury or sodium vapor lamps for street lighting, but going to LEDs is a move in the wrong direction. These government bureaucrats and planners are only thinking of the money saved in electricity cost and NOT of the health and welfare of the people who will be subjected to this lighting.
SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy says Seattle will lead an effort to promote street lights that use energy efficient light emitting diodes, or LEDs.
The DOE said Monday that Seattle was chosen to lead a national consortium of cities that will study the best ways to use the lights and what equipment to buy. The federal agency is providing $200,000 for the program.
Seattle City Light plans to install 5,000 LED street lights this year and 40,000 during the next five years.
