Peter Mendleson: Britain's Free Speech Killer & the Digital Economy Bill
“It’s a bad day for democracy, bordering on disgraceful, when such a complicated bill, which could negatively affect many people, gets shoved through the Commons so quickly. It’s an appalling indictment of our democracy that this can happen with a bill which requires a great deal of understanding."Andrew Heaney, UK's TalkTalk Dir. of Regulations

The speedy manner in which the Digital Economy Bill has been pushed through Parliament has been called ‘undemocratic’ by the likes of internet service provider TalkTalk, politicians and internet freedom campaigners. It has been processed so speedily as it is being pushed through in the political wash-up process - which takes place between an election being called and Parliament being dissolved. TalkTalk’s director of regulation, Andrew Heaney, said, “It’s a bad day for democracy, bordering on disgraceful, when such a complicated bill, which could negatively affect many people, gets shoved through the Commons so quickly. It’s an appalling indictment of our democracy that this can happen with a bill which requires a great deal of understanding." Open Rights Group executive director Jim Killock said: "This is an utter disgrace. This is an attack on everyone's right to communicate, work and gain an educ ation. Politicians have shown themselves to be incompetent and completely out of touch with an entire generation's values.” Former Labour Minister Tom Watson and Labour MP Kate Hoey are concerned that the Bill will be pushed into law by a “stitch-up” between the leaders of three main parties. The four new studies conducted by Canadian researchers conclude that the traditional seasonal flu vaccine seems to have boosted the risk of infection with pandemic H1N1 swine flu by almost double. The study discovered that seasonal flu vaccination was linked with a 68 percent boosted risk of falling in prey to swine flu. The studies, published April 6 in the online journal PLoS Medicine, attributed to the combined of over 40 researchers including many of Canada's top influenza experts. Prakash Sharma, Top News

Canada has become the first country to ban people
with chronic-fatigue syndrome from donating blood
OTTAWA — Canada has become the first country to ban people with chronic-fatigue syndrome from donating blood. The precautionary move is a result of Health Canada's concern over a virus known as XMRV, which has been linked to chronic fatigue. XMRV closely resembles the AIDS virus, prompting fears it can be similarly transmitted through blood transfusions. The virus has also been linked to prostate cancer. Dr Dana Devine, the vice-president of medical and research affairs for Canadian Blood Services, said she expects the new guidelines to take effect by the end of the month. A recent survey by the TUC discovered that one in five public workers turned up for work during the past month – one of the coldest winters for 30 years – in spite of being poorly. Another report of the findings of an earlier survey, using a wider cross section of UK workers showed that 95 per cent have admitted to struggling into work when ill. It seems that people are not as work-shy, and do not take as many "sickies", as is often suggested. Why is it, then, that the very first assumption made about people with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) is that they are lazy and do not want to work, when that runs contrary to the national trend and when they previously had a good attendance record at work or school? These studies should help dispel this myth once and for all, and have doctors focusing on the organic cause of this disabling neurological illness, which keeps so many people who are willing but not a ble hidden from view and cut off from being as active in society as they long to be again. PC Jason Hanvey and Sgt Andrew Kennedy were
jailed for their brutal treatment of a 19-year-old girl
Two policemen who inflicted “deliberate cruelty” on a young woman were each jailed for 18 months yesterday. CCTV footage from a police station’s custody suite showed Jason Hanvey press her face down on a desk as he screamed: “Move and I’ll rip your f*****g skull off!” He also grabbed her hair, pulled her handcuffed arms over her head for more than a minute and, as he held her in a “cruel position”, asked her to say “pretty please” to be released. Hanvey taunted her that he earned £33,000 a year while she was on benefits. And when she accused police of being “pathetic” he punished her for her “impertinence”. Andrew Kennedy, senior desk officer at Manchester’s Collyhurst police station, stood by and showed “complete indifference” as he failed to intervene. Sentencing them at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, Judge Anthony Gee said: “It wa s outright thuggery and little short of torture.” Daily Express Reporter, Daily Express
