The hole is 20 miles from one of the largest natural gas wells in the world. The Russians have developed some of the largest natural gas fields by exploding nukes six to seven miles deep and fracturing the crust of the earth. Gaspom, the Russian natural gas giant, is developing similar fields throughout Siberia. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the technology leaked to the west and western petroleum companies have developed large fields in Western Australia and many other places. There is a glut of petroleum and natural gas available now.

I dowse the nuke causing this hole was 24 megatons. The nuke was blasted seven miles deep and the rising fireball carved a shaft to the surface in 1988. It has been there for 26 years leaking natural gas and radiation. The natural gas was flared for years.
